In our state, the functions normally associated with a DMV are separated between two agencies: Department of Driver Services (DDS) DDS helps you obtain, renew, or replace learner’s permits, ID cards, and licenses. How do I earn my learner's permit or first driver's license?

You may apply for an Instructional Permit at age 15. After 1 year and 1 day with an instructional permit, you may apply for a Provisional Driver's License. You must be 18 years old to carry a full license for everyday, non-commercial vehicles.

You must renew your license every 8 years. You may be required to pass a vision test, knowledge exam, and the road skills test.

Renewal costs $32, but you may be eligible to receive a $5 discount by renewing online.

What does it cost to renew my annual vehicle registration?

If you own a passenger vehicle or motorcycle, annual registration costs $20.

You must also pay any applicable taxes, as well as fees for special license plates. If you live in metro Atlanta, you must provide proof of emissions inspection.

How do I transfer my out-of-state or out-of-country driver's license?

Visit a Department of Driver Services (DDS) Customer Service Center to transfer your driver's license within 30 days of moving to Georgia.

You will hand over your former license, pay the license fee, and receive a temporary license. You'll receive your permanent license within a few weeks in the mail.

How do I transfer my vehicle's registration, title, and plate from another state?

Go to the County Tag Office in the county where you reside to renew your vehicle registration. Learn more about transferring your vehicle's title and license plate on the Department of Revenue's website.

You have 30 days from the date you establish Georgia residence to complete this transfer.

As a college student from another state, do I need to register my vehicle in Georgia?

If you are a college student whose permanent home is outside Georgia, you don't need to register your vehicle in the state. However, you do need to make sure that your home state registration is current.
